New Amtrak Trains To Redefine U.S. Rail Experience Starting In 2026

Amtrak’s story began over 50 years ago with its inaugural train departure from New York on May 1, 1971. Although the era of train travel quickly gave way to the rise of aviation, Amtrak has maintained its essential role, serving as a dependable link for commuters and travelers across the U.S.

Now, five decades later, the nation’s rail service is ushering in significant transformations. Amtrak is introducing a new generation of trains, equipped with state-of-the-art features aimed at enhancing the speed, comfort, and sustainability of train travel.

Leading this new era is the Amtrak Airo, a cutting-edge train set to launch in 2026, signaling what the company calls “a fresh chapter in rail travel.” Manufactured in California, these trains will first operate on key routes such as the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, and Vermonter.

What sets the Amtrak Airo apart? For one, the trains will feature expansive panoramic windows, offering passengers a wider, more immersive view of the passing scenery. Coach class seating will receive a major upgrade, with added legroom, larger tray tables, adjustable headrests, cup holders, tablet holders, enhanced lighting, and personal outlets and USB ports for charging devices.

In terms of amenities, passengers will benefit from onboard Wi-Fi, touchless restroom controls, and advanced digital customer information systems. The café cars will also undergo a modern transformation, introducing convenient self-service options.

But it’s not just about comfort—Amtrak Airo is committed to sustainability. With a top speed of 125 mph, these trains will shorten travel times on several key routes. Moreover, the new engines are designed for greater fuel efficiency, reducing particulate emissions by 90% when operating on diesel.

Amtrak is also enhancing accessibility across its trains. Passengers with wheelchairs or mobility devices will find better accommodations, including accessible restrooms, vestibules, and café cars. Additionally, specially designed lifts will be provided to assist those who require extra help boarding.

The initial Amtrak Airo trains will start operating next year on select routes. Over time, however, they will expand to serve a range of major lines, such as the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Amtrak Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Amtrak Downeaster, Amtrak Cascades, Maple Leaf, New Haven-Springfield-Greenfield Service, Palmetto, Carolinian, Pennsylvanian, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express, and Adirondack.
